Coral Gables is a planned 1920s city just south of downtown Miami: coral-rock gates, tree-lined boulevards, the University of Miami, the Venetian Pool and a walkable restaurant strip on Miracle Mile. It is a calm, upscale base with easy Metrorail and free trolley links, not a beach destination. One full day covers the centre; two lets you add Fairchild and Matheson Hammock.

The free Coral Gables Trolley runs mainly along Ponce de Leon Blvd through Miracle Mile and links to the Douglas Road Metrorail station; Miami-Dade Transit buses cover the rest. Metrorail's University station serves the campus. A car helps for Fairchild, Matheson Hammock and the beaches; metered and garage parking is common on Miracle Mile.
