Freiburg is a university city of about 220,000 at the western edge of the Black Forest, 40 minutes by train from Basel and 2 hours from Frankfurt Airport. The compact Altstadt, the minster tower and the Bächle canals fill a day; the forest, the Schauinsland cable car and the Kaiserstuhl vineyards fill the next. It is one of Germany's sunniest cities and a practical base for the southern Black Forest.

Getting around

Walk the Altstadt: it is 10–15 min across. Trams and buses run under the RVF fare system; a single Zone A ride is €2.50 and a Regio 24 day pass is €7 for one person or €14 for up to five. Trams run all night on weekends and holidays. Bikes are the local default; rentals at the Hauptbahnhof and the Frelo bike-share scheme cover short hops. Riding without a ticket carries a €60 fine.

Safety

Freiburg is a safe, low-crime city; the real risks are tram ticket fines (€60 (≈ US$70)), bikes on pavements, pickpockets around the station and the market, and heat on summer hikes.
  • Do not confuse Freiburg im Breisgau with Freiburg an der Elbe, Fribourg in Switzerland or Freiberg in Saxony when booking trains.
  • Freiburg is a low-emission zone (Umweltzone): any car, including electric, needs a Feinstaubplakette badge.
  • Ticket checks are frequent on trams and regional trains; a €60 (≈ US$70) fine applies.
  • The Schauinsland cable car does not run in bad weather: check before going up.
  • In the pedestrian zone, cyclists must walk their bikes on weekday daytime.
