Tlalpujahua is a former gold-mining town of about 3,600 people in eastern Michoacán, at roughly 2,600 m, and a Pueblo Mágico. Its draw is glass Christmas ornaments made in more than 200 small workshops, the old Dos Estrellas mine, and a baroque church with an interior covered in plant motifs. The centre is compact and flat enough to cross on foot; the mine and the national park sit outside town and need a taxi or a car.

Getting around

The centre is small and walkable; the zócalo, the church and most ornament shops sit within a 10-minute walk. Taxis wait near the zócalo for the mine and Rayón park. A car helps for the mine and for the Monarch butterfly reserve near Angangueo, but reserve access and transport are unverified — check before you go. Parking disappears on Feria weekends in Oct–Dec.

Watch out

Safety

Tlalpujahua is a small, calm Pueblo Mágico and the centre is safe on foot in daylight and early evening. The real risks are the Feria crowds in Oct–Dec, mountain roads at night, and cash-only shops: carry pesos and drive the toll highway by day.
  • Feria de la Esfera runs Oct–Dec and brings an estimated 400,000 (≈ US$25,000) visitors; December weekends are the worst, with gridlock and no parking — come on a weekday or skip the season.
  • Many ornament shops open weekends only and take cash only; carry pesos.
  • Dos Estrellas mine tours are in Spanish only and photography is not allowed; the site posts 09:00–16:00 opening.
  • At about 2,600 (≈ US$150) m the altitude is mild but real: pace the first afternoon.
