Jericho is a Champlain Valley town of about 5,000 people strung along VT-15, 25–30 minutes east of Burlington by car. There is no bus from Burlington to Jericho itself, so a vehicle decides the trip. What you get is a compact historic village (Old Red Mill, Snowflake Bentley Museum, maple shops), the Jericho Center green, and the Underhill side of Mount Mansfield with trailheads at Underhill State Park and Butler Lodge. One half-day covers the village; add a second day only if you are hiking Mansfield or skiing nearby.

Getting around

A car is effectively required: the bus that once linked Jericho to Jeffersonville was discontinued, and Green Mountain Transit serves Essex, a few miles west. VT-15 runs through the village; VT-117 links to US-2 and I-89. Distances are short but spread out — village to Jericho Center is about 3 km, village to the Underhill trailheads about 8–10 km. Park at the post office or school for Palmer Lane Maple when its lot is full; do not park along Old Pump Rd.

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are rural driving at dusk, thin cell coverage on the mountain roads, and mud-season or winter trail conditions. Tell someone your trailhead plan and carry water.
  • No public bus reaches Jericho: plan a car, taxi or rideshare from Essex or Burlington.
  • Underhill State Park is typically closed in early winter and during mud season; check before driving up.
  • Joe's Snack Bar closes for the winter; several farm stands and bakeries are seasonal or by appointment.
  • Cell coverage thins on the Mountain Rd and Stevensville Rd trailheads — download maps first.
  • Rural roads are dark and unlit, and deer cross at dusk: drive slowly after sunset.
