Sochi is Russia's biggest summer sea resort, a 105 km strip of coast with a subtropical climate, shingle beaches and the Caucasus mountains behind it. It hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics, so the same city runs a beach season from mid-May to October and a ski season at Krasnaya Polyana in February and March. Almost all visitors are domestic; English is thin outside hotels and the airport.

Getting around

Greater Sochi runs 105 km along the coast, so distance matters: the centre, Adler and Krasnaya Polyana are separate bases. Suburban trains (elektrichka) link Sochi central station, Khosta, Adler and Krasnaya Polyana and beat the coast road in summer. Buses and marshrutkas cover the rest; taxis are cheap by Western standards but agree the price or use an app.

Watch out

Safety

Sochi is a busy resort and generally calm for a Russian big city, but the real risks are summer traffic, rip currents on shingle beaches, and cash and card problems: carry rubles and keep your passport on you.
  • The coast road (M4/Kurortny Prospekt) jams badly in July and August: use the train for Adler and Krasnaya Polyana.
  • English is uncommon outside hotels, the airport and big restaurants; have addresses written in Cyrillic.
  • Card payment is unreliable at small shops, guesthouses and beach cafés: carry cash rubles.
  • Shingle beaches, not sand; sea urchins and jellyfish appear in late summer.
  • Foreign cards issued outside Russia often do not work in Russian ATMs and terminals: bring cash and check before you rely on a card.
