Yakima is the main city of the Yakima Valley, an irrigated agricultural belt on the Columbia River Plateau where most US hops and a large share of Washington wine grapes are grown. The city itself is small and spread out, with a compact downtown of tasting rooms, a theatre and a museum, and the real draw is the valley around it: wineries south of Union Gap, the Yakima River canyon west on I-82, and the Yakama Nation towns east. You need a car.

Getting around

A car is close to essential: sights, wineries and trailheads sit 10–40 km apart and buses do not reach them. Yakima Transit runs local routes 1–9 plus Selah (10) and an Ellensburg commuter (11); routes 7 and 9 link the airport to downtown. Downtown itself is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. Rideshare coverage is thin outside the centre.

Safety

Yakima is a normal mid-size US city: the tourist core and valley towns are fine, but avoid walking alone at night in east-side neighbourhoods and lock the car at trailheads.
  • Summer afternoons regularly pass 35°C (95°F); carry water and plan winery stops for morning or evening.
  • Winter brings freezing fog on I-82 and black ice on the canyon road; check conditions before driving WA-821 at night.
  • Gang-related violence is concentrated in specific east-side neighbourhoods; the tourist core and valley towns are not affected in practice.
  • Many wineries are small family operations open only Fri–Sun or by appointment; check hours before driving out.
  • Cell coverage is patchy in the Yakima River canyon and on US-12 toward White Pass.
