Santa María del Río is a Pueblo Mágico of about 12,000 people on the Santa María river, 52 km south of San Luis Potosí on MEX 57. It is the self-declared cradle of the rebozo, the hand-woven shawl, and its compact centre has two adjoining plazas, a 1604 parish church and a rebozo museum. Most travellers see it as a half-day or one-night stop; the haciendas, the waterfall and the balneario need a car or a taxi.

Getting around

The centre is compact and walkable: both plazas, the parish church, the chapel and the rebozo museum sit within about 10 minutes on foot. For haciendas, the Cascada del Salto or the Balneario de Lourdes you need a car or a taxi; there is no useful local bus network for visitors.

Watch out

Safety

A small, quiet town; the main risks are the unmarked waterfall trail, unlit rural roads at night and summer heat. Use 911 for anything urgent and 078 for tourist help.
  • A car or taxi is effectively required for the haciendas, the waterfall and the balneario; the town itself is walkable.
  • The Cascada del Salto trail is unimproved and unmarked with no facilities: go with someone who knows it, in daylight, and do not swim alone.
  • Some hotels and restaurants are cash only; carry pesos and small notes.
  • Summer afternoons are hot and the rainy season can make dirt roads to the haciendas muddy.
