Incheon is South Korea's third-largest city and home to Incheon International Airport, one of Asia's main hub airports. Its old port area has Korea's only Chinatown, dating from an 1883 treaty port, next to a preserved colonial-era street. The newer Songdo district adds a planned waterfront business area with parks. Most visitors see it as a half day before or after Seoul rather than a destination in itself.

Getting around

Incheon Subway lines 1 and 2, plus Seoul Metro line 1 to Incheon Station, cover the main areas; a T-money card works on all of them (base fare about ₩1,600, 2026 estimate, check). AREX express reaches Seoul Station in about 43 min; the all-stop AREX is cheaper (about ₩4,750, check) and slower (about 1 h). Taxis start around ₩4,800 and bus routes cover gaps.

Watch out

Safety

Incheon is safe for travellers; the practical risk is a missed transfer at the airport, so allow extra time.
  • Incheon airport has two terminals linked by a free shuttle bus (about 15-20 min): confirm which terminal your airline uses before a tight transfer.
  • Chinatown and the nearby murals get very crowded on weekends and public holidays.
  • Songdo and the port are spread out and not walkable between sights: budget time for buses or taxis.
  • Ferries to the west islands and Ganghwa buses can be cancelled in fog and strong wind; check before you go.
  • Late-night AREX and metro services end around midnight; confirm the last train if you land late.
  • Airport taxis and unofficial drivers may overcharge; use the official stand or a metered taxi.
