Leptis Magnaلَبْدَة

A full day: the site is large and unshaded. Go at opening (around 8:00) to beat the heat and crowds. One night in nearby Khoms is enough.

Leptis Magna is one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the Mediterranean, with a forum, basilica, theatre and harbour. The site is vast and exposed; a guide is recommended because on-site information is limited. Most visitors base themselves in Khoms, 3 km east, and spend a single day walking the ruins.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
