Reno sits at the foot of the Sierra Nevada on the Truckee River, 3 h 30 min by car from Sacramento and about 4 h from the Bay Area. Downtown is compact and walkable; the best sights — Lake Tahoe, Virginia City, Pyramid Lake — are 30–60 minutes out, so a car changes the trip. Casinos still anchor downtown, but the river district, museums and nearby trails now carry more of the day.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable. RTC RAPID runs frequent buses along South Virginia Street between the 4th Street Station and Meadowood Mall; the Sierra Spirit circulator links downtown with the university. A car is worth it for Tahoe, Virginia City and Pyramid Lake — I-80 runs east–west, I-580 north–south, and McCarran Blvd rings the valley.

Watch out

Safety

Reno is generally safe for visitors who stay in the downtown, river and Midtown areas. The real risks are winter mountain driving, summer heat on trails, and drinking on the casino floor — watch your drink and don't drive after.
  • I-80 over Donner Summit can close for up to a day in winter storms; carry chains if you cross without 4WD.
  • Summer afternoons reach the mid-90s°F; do trail and lake plans in the morning.
  • Casino floors and downtown bars are 21+; carry ID.
  • Some downtown blocks are quiet and poorly lit at night — stay on Virginia Street and the river walk.
