Chinchilla is a Western Downs farming town of about 6,600 people, 300 km north-west of Brisbane on the Warrego Highway. It is known for melons, petrified wood and the Cactoblastis moth that ended the prickly pear. Sights sit close to Heeney Street, so most of the town is walkable in an afternoon.

No public transport. One or two taxis work the town. Heeney Street, the museum and Charley's Creek are walkable from the centre; bring or hire a car for the weir, Barakula Forest, fossicking sites and Brigalow. Budget, Avis and Thrifty have desks in town.

Watch out

Safety

A small, quiet country town; the real risks are heat, long drives with wildlife on the road at dusk and dawn, and swimming where you cannot see the bottom. Lock the car and use normal city sense after dark.
  • Summer days pass 35 °C and the highway drive is long: carry water and start early.
  • Fossicking for petrified wood needs a licence and a small fee from the Visitor Information Centre; do not dig without one.
  • The train runs about twice a week and the bus stop sits on the highway, across the railway bridge from Heeney Street: check times before you commit.
  • Chinchilla Weir water levels fluctuate; ask at the Visitor Information Centre before driving out for a swim.
  • The road up to the Bunya Mountains is winding and not suitable for caravans.
