Peabody

Skip Peabody as a base unless you have a car: 1 night for the museums and mall, or stay here cheap and drive to Salem, 10 min away.

Peabody is a working suburban city of about 54,000 on Boston's North Shore, known as the Leather City for its tannery past. It has two small museums, a 275-acre farm and one of the region's biggest malls, but almost no walkable centre and weekday-only hourly buses. Most travellers sleep here for the cheaper chain hotels and drive to Salem, Gloucester and Boston.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: Route 114 crosses the city and Route 128/I-95 rings it. The 435 and 436 buses from Lynn and Salem run weekdays only, roughly hourly, so they are a fallback rather than a plan.

Watch out

Safety

Suburban and generally safe; the real issues are driving on Route 114 and Route 1, winter ice, and leaving nothing visible in a parked car.
  • Buses 435 and 436 are weekday-only and about hourly: check the last run before you rely on them.
  • Route 114 and Route 1 traffic backs up at rush hour; add 15–20 min to any Salem or Boston drive.
  • Winter ice on side streets and unshovelled sidewalks is the main physical risk.
  • Museum opening days are limited: check before you go.
