Salmo is a village of about 1,100 people on Highway 3 in the West Kootenays, 30 minutes by car from Nelson, Castlegar and Trail. It is a fuel-and-food stop with a small museum, six stone murals, two oversized roadside curiosities and a 48 km rail trail to Nelson. Almost everyone passes through by car; a few stay for the trail, the ski hill or the Shambhala festival.

Getting around

A private vehicle is the practical way in and around: Highway 3 (Crowsnest) meets Highway 6 here, and Nelson, Castlegar and Trail are each about a 30-minute drive. The village core is walkable in 10 minutes. BC Transit's West Kootenay Health Connections runs to Nelson three days a week, reserved in advance, with medical appointments taking priority; Mountain Man Mike's runs a weekly Calgary–Kaslo service that stops in Salmo.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a village of its size; the real risks are the mountain pass in winter, wildlife on trails and the August festival crowds.
  • Highway 3 over Kootenay Pass (Stagleap) is the highest all-weather pass in BC: winter tires or chains, and check DriveBC before you cross.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the pass and on the rail trail north of Ymir.
  • Shambhala in early August brings 10,000 (≈ US$7,500)+ people: book beds and campsites months ahead or avoid the dates.
  • The Nelway border crossing to Washington has limited hours — check before you plan a US side trip.
