Orizaba sits at about 1,240 m in the Veracruz highlands, halfway between Mexico City and the port of Veracruz, under Mexico's highest peak. It is a compact colonial centre with a Belgian iron palace, a river walk and a cable car, and it is a working coffee and beer town rather than a resort. Most travellers see it in a day on the way between the capital and the coast.

Getting around

The historic centre is walkable: cathedral to Palacio de Hierro is about 5 min on foot, and the river walk starts behind the City Hall. Local buses and taxis cover the rest; the cable car base is at the north end of the centre. For Pico de Orizaba or the 500 Steps you need a taxi, a tour or a car.

Watch out

Safety

Orizaba is a calm, walkable highland city and the centre is fine on foot in daylight. The real risks are altitude on the Pico, slippery river-walk stones after rain, and mountain-road driving; use the bus between cities and keep valuables out of sight at night.
  • Altitude: the city is around 1,240 (≈ US$70) m and the Pico trailheads are far higher; allow a day to adjust before hiking.
  • Afternoon rain from June to October; carry a shell and start outdoor plans in the morning.
  • The mountain road between Orizaba and Mexico City has sharp curves and can be slow or closed in winter weather; the bus is the safer default.
  • Cable car and some museums keep limited hours and close on some weekdays: check before you go up.
