Montañita is a small surf village on Ecuador's Ruta del Spondylus, about 2 h by bus from Guayaquil. It is a grid of a few streets: hostels, seafood menus, surf rentals and bars that turn into clubs. Two or three nights covers surfing, the Point break and a day trip; the town is loud at night, so light sleepers stay in Olón or Manglaralto.

Watch out

Safety

Petty theft and night-time drinking are the real risks; keep phones and bags close on the beach and on crowded nights, and use registered taxis after dark.
  • Nightlife is loud until the early hours; rooms on the main strip get no quiet.
  • Pickpocketing and bag-snatching rise on crowded nights and at the beach after dark.
  • Tap water is not safe to drink; buy bottled or filtered water.
  • Mosquitoes are active at night — repellent and long sleeves help.
  • Surf at the Point is for intermediate and advanced surfers; the bottom is rocky.
