Hope sits at the junction of four highways at the east end of the Fraser Valley, where the Trans-Canada, the Coquihalla, the Crowsnest and the Lougheed meet. Locals say everything else in BC is "beyond Hope". It is a one-night road stop with a walkable downtown, a canyon trail and a film history, not a destination week.

Getting around

The town is small enough to cross on foot or by bicycle; downtown and the old highway strip are the two commercial areas. BC Transit Route 72 links Hope with Kent, connecting to Chilliwack and Harrison Hot Springs. A car is needed for the Othello Tunnels, the Hope Slide and Kawkawa Lake.

Watch out

Safety

Hope is a small, low-crime town; the real risks are highway driving in winter, fast water at the river confluence, and wildlife on trails. Standard Canada advice applies: 911 for emergencies.
  • Highway 5 (the Coquihalla) is a high mountain route: in extreme winter weather the lower Fraser Canyon route is the safer choice.
  • Othello Tunnels in Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park closes in winter for flood repairs; check BC Parks before driving out.
  • The Hope Slide viewpoint is a rest area on Highway 3, not a staffed attraction: no facilities beyond simple toilets.
  • Motels fill on summer weekends and during Hope Brigade Days in early September; book ahead.
