Petersburg is a small agricultural town best known as the gateway to Lincoln's New Salem State Park, the reconstructed village where Abraham Lincoln lived as a young man. The town itself has a quiet historic core, the Edgar Lee Masters Home and a riverside lodge. Most visitors spend 2–4 hours here on a day trip from Springfield or en route across Central Illinois.
