Doylestown is the county seat of Bucks County, 43 km (27 mi) north of Philadelphia, and the reason to come is a single cluster of concrete castles built by Henry Chapman Mercer between 1908 and 1916. The borough itself is small — about 8,200 people — walkable, and best treated as a day trip or one overnight from Philadelphia rather than a multi-night base.
