Catania is Sicily's second city, rebuilt in dark lava stone after the 1693 earthquake, and the island's main transport hub: flights land at Fontanarossa, trains run the east coast, and buses leave for Etna, Taormina and Syracuse. The baroque centre is walkable in a day; the city earns its keep as a base for Etna and the Val di Noto.

Getting around

The centre is compact and best on foot. AMTS buses cover the rest (single €1, 90 min; day pass €2.50). The metro is short (Stesicoro–Giovanni XXIII–Borgo–Nesima), runs Mon–Sat only, and links the station to the Circumetnea railway. Driving in the centre is hard: a ZTL covers the old town and cameras enforce it.

Watch out

Safety

Catania is busy and generally safe by day; the real risks are pickpockets around the market and station, summer heat, and driving into the ZTL. Keep bags zipped in La Pescheria and on packed buses.
  • Etna eruptions can disrupt CTA flights: check your airline before travel days.
  • ZTL camera zone in the centre: do not drive into it without a permit.
  • Metro has no Sunday or public-holiday service; Circumetnea trains run Mon–Sat only.
  • La Pescheria market is busiest and loudest in the morning; watch bags in crowds.
  • Summer heat is real: 35°C+ in Jul–Aug, plan sights for early and late.
