Torrevieja is a low-rise resort town on the Costa Blanca south, 41 km from Alicante, built around a salt industry and two salt lakes. It is not a monument city: people come for beaches, the Natural Park lagoons, the Friday street market and long stays in holiday flats. Two or three nights covers the town; a week suits beach time and day trips.

Getting around

The centre is walkable. Costa Azul buses link the centre, La Mata and the beaches; taxis are plentiful. A car helps for the salt lakes and out-of-town beaches, but parking near the centre is hard in July and August.

Safety

A calm resort town; the real risks are pickpockets at the Friday market and crowded beaches, plus summer heat and unshaded salt-lake paths.
  • Pickpockets work the crowded Friday market, often in pairs; keep valuables unreachable.
  • Report theft to the Guardia Civil, not the local police, and keep the report number for insurance.
  • Parking near the centre is scarce in peak season.
  • Salt-lake paths are exposed: no shade, take water.
