Agrigento is a hilltop Sicilian city whose main draw, the Valley of the Temples, sits below the old town on a ridge above the sea. Most travellers come for the Greek ruins and leave; the historic centre, the archaeological museum and the Pirandello birthplace justify a single overnight rather than a rushed day trip from Palermo. Access is by regional train or bus, and the ruins are reached by city bus or a long downhill walk.

Getting around

The old town is compact and walkable from Agrigento Centrale. City buses (TUA routes 1, 2, 3 and 2/) run from Piazzale Rosselli to the archaeological museum and the Valley of the Temples entrances. Buy tickets in advance from bars or tabacchi and validate on board; contactless and mobile payment are accepted. A shuttle is included with the Agrigento Culture Pass.

Watch out

Safety

Agrigento is generally safe for tourists. The real risks are summer heat in the exposed ruins, steep stairs in the old town, and pickpocketing in crowded areas: keep bags zipped and go early in July–August.
  • Summer heat is severe and shade in the ruins is limited: carry water and go early.
  • Bus service to the Valley of the Temples thins in the evening; check the last return.
  • Some city-bus route maps online do not match actual changes: confirm at the stop.
  • The old town is steep with stairs between Via Atenea and the cathedral ridge.
