Gwaii Haanas protects 138 islands across the southern third of Haida Gwaii, 130 km off the British Columbia mainland, plus a marine reserve and Haida heritage sites. There are no roads and no vehicle access: you arrive by sea kayak, chartered boat or floatplane, and every visit needs a trip permit. The draw is SG̱ang Gwaay (Ninstints), a UNESCO World Heritage village of standing totem poles, watched over by Haida Gwaii Watchmen each summer. Costs are high and logistics are slow, so this is a trip you plan around, not a stop you add.

- Permit and orientation
- Every visitor needs a trip permit and must complete the Parks Canada orientation before entering the reserve.
- Watchmen and village sites
- Land at SG̱ang Gwaay and other Watchmen sites only when a Watchman is present; do not enter closed areas.
- Camping
- No formal campsites. Camp on sand or rock above the high tide line, out of sight and sound of other groups, and away from stream mouths from mid-August.
- Fires
- Cook on a portable stove. Any fire must be below the high tide line, small, fed with driftwood, and cleared to ash and scattered charcoal afterwards.
- Human waste
- Use the intertidal flush near the water line where possible; otherwise a 20 cm hole at least 100 m from water. Pack out toilet paper and hygiene products.
- Food storage
- Burn or bag food scraps immediately and hang food out of reach of animals; buried waste still attracts bears.
- Archaeological sites
- Treat every campsite as an archaeological site; do not dig in middens or disturb historical features.
- Leave no trace
- Pack out all garbage including small pieces; dismantle beach furniture and return logs and rocks to random positions.

What are the best hikes in Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve?
There are no maintained trails. The closest thing to a hike is the boardwalk at SG̱ang Gwaay, which you walk with a Watchman. Elsewhere people walk beaches and boggy forest behind them, or paddle the sheltered east coast of Moresby Island; the San Christoval Range is for experienced parties only.
When is the best time to visit Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve?
May to September, when Haida Gwaii Watchmen are at the village sites and seabird colonies are active. June and July give the longest days and the best odds of settled weather; August brings salmon spawning and the return of rain; October onwards is storm season with little operator support.
Do I need a guide to visit Gwaii Haanas?
Not always, but independent travel requires a permit, the orientation session, and your own boat or floatplane charter plus full expedition gear. Most visitors join a guided kayak or boat trip because of the cost and logistics.
Can I visit Gwaii Haanas as a day trip?
Yes, day visits are possible by chartered boat or floatplane and still need permits for everyone on board, but the travel time means a day trip only reaches the northern edge. SG̱ang Gwaay is far south and realistically needs a multi-day trip.
Is Gwaii Haanas the same as Naikoon Provincial Park?
No. Naikoon Provincial Park is on Graham Island in the north of Haida Gwaii and has road access and beaches you can reach by car. Gwaii Haanas is the roadless reserve across the southern islands.
