Victoria, Texas
Give Victoria one night as a break on the Houston–Corpus Christi drive, or skip it: the museums and square fill half a day, not two.
Victoria is an inland South Barrier Coast town of about 62,000, roughly 30 miles from the Gulf and 2 h from Houston, San Antonio and Corpus Christi. It works as a cheap overnight stop with a walkable old square, a La Salle shipwreck museum and Texas's oldest delicatessen — not as a destination in its own right.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: sights sit 2–4 km apart and sidewalks are patchy outside downtown. Downtown itself is walkable in 15–20 min end to end. No useful city bus network for visitors; rideshare coverage is thin, so book a taxi or plan to drive. Parking downtown is free.

Watch out
Safety
- Summer heat: June–September highs sit in the mid-30s °C with high humidity; do museums at midday, not the zoo.
- Hurricane season runs June–November, peaking late August to October; check forecasts before a coastal leg.
- Some downtown blocks near the hospital and parts of south Victoria see more crime after dark; drive rather than walk those at night.
- Many downtown restaurants close between lunch and dinner and shut early on Sundays.
