Karlstad is Värmland's largest city, built on the delta where the Klarälven river meets Lake Vänern. Safety

Karlstad is calm and safe by European city standards; the real issues are winter ice on pavements, dark afternoons in December and driving on unlit rural roads at dusk.
  • The morning flight out of KSD is quiet: the terminal and café may not open until close to departure, so don't arrive hours early.
  • Rental cars and seats on regional flights get scarce during the February rally week.
  • Winter tyres are required from December to March in winter conditions if you drive.
  • Some rural sights and parks close outside summer; check before a long drive.
