Bolu

Give Bolu one night as a stopover on the Istanbul–Ankara road, or a full day if you have a car for Abant and Yedigöller; the town itself is half a day.

Bolu sits at 742 m on the main land route between Istanbul and Ankara, 260 km east of Istanbul and 190 km northwest of Ankara, so most travellers pass through rather than stay. The town centre is compact and walkable in an hour or two, with Ottoman mosques, a hamam and a small museum. What makes Bolu worth a stop is the country around it: forested mountains, crater lakes, hot springs at Karacasu and ski slopes at Kartalkaya. Without a car the out-of-town sights are hard to reach, so plan Bolu as a one-night break in a road trip, not a destination in itself.

Getting around

The centre is compact and walkable. For Abant, Yedigöller, Karacasu and Kartalkaya you need a car or a taxi; dolmuş services exist but are limited. The bus station (Bolu Otogarı) is 3 km west of the centre off the D100, and a dolmuş into town may be included in your inter-city ticket — check when buying.

Watch out

Safety

Bolu is a small, calm city and the centre is safe to walk by day and evening. The real risks are the active fault line, winter mountain roads and the lack of facilities at out-of-town sights.
  • The North Anatolian Fault runs through the valley and the region has major earthquakes every few decades; know your hotel's exit route.
  • Mountain roads to Abant and Yedigöller are narrow and can be icy or foggy outside summer; check conditions before setting out.
  • Kartalkaya and Sarialan are ski resorts with their own accommodation; snow chains or winter tyres are needed on the access road in season.
  • Out-of-town sights have little parking, signage or facilities; carry water and cash.
