Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Arundel is a small West Sussex town built around a medieval castle that was heavily rebuilt in the 19th century, with a Roman Catholic cathedral, a compact old centre and the River Arun running through it. It sits at the foot of the South Downs, about 90 minutes by train from London Victoria. The centre is walkable in half a day; the castle and gardens take the rest. Most travellers come as a day trip from London, Brighton or Chichester, or stop one night on the way to the coast.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Walk. The town is compact but High Street climbs steeply from the river to the castle gate, so allow more time than the distance suggests. Arundel station is about a mile southeast of the centre; taxis are limited, so check the walk or arrange a pickup. Buses run along the A27 corridor to Worthing, Littlehampton and Chichester.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Amberley Museum and village

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Train from Arundel to Amberley, about 10 min, then a short walk to the museum

Industrial heritage site with a narrow-gauge railway; check seasonal opening days before you go.

Chichester

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Train via Barnham, about 30–40 min, or bus 85 on limited days

Roman walls, cathedral and museums; a full day if you add Fishbourne.

Worthing

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Bus 9 along the coast, roughly hourly

Pier and seafront; the bus is slow and the train route needs a change.

Littlehampton

go

Door to door: About 50 min

Train via Barnham, about 25–35 min

River mouth, beach and harbour; half a day is enough.

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Train via Barnham, about 1 h 15 min

Full day out; go early, the coast line fills up at weekends.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

High Street and Tarrant Street

In the old centre, walking distance to castle gate, cathedral and all restaurants. Priciest and noisier on weekend evenings.

Around the station and The Causeway

Budget and chain hotels, 15–20 min walk downhill into town; best if you arrive late or leave early by train.

Crossbush, on the A27 east

Car-oriented chain hotels with parking; 25–30 min walk or a short taxi to the centre. Only worth it with a car.

Watch out

Safety

Arundel is a low-crime small town and safe to walk by day and evening. The real risks are the steep, uneven pavements, flooded riverside paths after rain, and dark unlit stretches on the walk back from the station.
  • Castle opening is seasonal and not daily: check dates and last entry before you book travel.
  • The station is a mile from the centre with a steep approach; not ideal with heavy bags.
  • High Street is steep and some pavements are narrow; the riverside and wetlands paths flood after heavy rain.
  • Restaurant kitchens in town close early on quiet weeknights; book dinner if you arrive after 20:00.
