  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Danbury is a small city in the Litchfield Hills, about 70 miles (110 km) northeast of New York City and once the hat-making capital of the United States. Sights are few and spread out across roughly 44 sq mi, so a car or the HART bus does the work. Most travellers use it as a break on I-84 or a cheaper bed for the Candlewood Lake area.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the city covers about 44 sq mi and sights are not walkable from one another. HART buses run local routes plus the CityCenter Trolley and a shuttle to Brewster, NY for Metro-North trains to New York. Rental desks (Hertz, Avis, Enterprise) sit along the I-84 corridor. Metro-North's Danbury branch connects to the New Haven line at Norwalk.

Watch out

Safety

Danbury is a normal small US city: daytime downtown and the mall area are fine, and the main risks are driving on I-84 in winter and unlit suburban roads at night. Keep the usual city habits after dark.
  • Sidewalks are missing on some suburban roads; drive or take HART after dark.
  • Winter ice on I-84 and Route 7 is a real hazard from Dec to Mar.
  • Hotel rates spike on fall-foliage and college-move-in weekends; book ahead.
  • Many downtown restaurants close one or two weekdays: check before you walk over.

Say or show

  • Danbury station is at 1 Patriot Drive, off White Street — Where is the train station?
  • Say this at the host stand; walk-ins are normal outside weekend dinner — A table for two, please
  • Cards are accepted almost everywhere; some diners are cash-only — Can I pay by card?
  • Ask about the lot behind the building — Is there parking?
  • Ask before walking: some roads have no sidewalk — How far is it on foot?
  • Tip 18–22% at sit-down restaurants — Thanks, keep the change
