Letterfrack is a village of about 200 people on the N59 in Connemara, and it exists as a travel base rather than a destination in itself: Connemara National Park and the Diamond Hill trail start at the visitor centre in the village, and Kylemore Abbey is 6 km east. Two nights covers both without rushing. A car makes the difference between a stop and a stay, because the coast, the beaches and the Twelve Bens trailheads are spread along lanes with no useful bus.

Getting around

You need a car. The N59 links Letterfrack with Clifden (14 km west) and Leenane and Westport to the north-east, and the national park, Kylemore and the Renvyle lanes are all off it. Bus Éireann 423 runs about every two hours between Westport and Clifden via Leenane and Letterfrack; Citylink 923 runs Galway to Clifden with a few services a day continuing to Letterfrack. Both are usable for arrival and for one trip to Clifden, not for touring. Driving is on the left; the coast lanes are single-track with passing places.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a village of its size; the real risks are weather on the hills, single-track roads and driving after a long day. Tell someone your route before hiking and carry waterproofs.
  • No filling station in the village: the nearest is about 6 km east on the N59, so fill up in Clifden or Westport.
  • Mobile coverage is 4G only; 5G has not reached this area, and signal drops in the glens.
  • Diamond Hill and the Twelve Bens are exposed quartzite: wind, rain and low cloud arrive fast, and paths get slippery.
  • Mountain rescue is called out here regularly for walkers in trainers and jeans; carry a map, waterproofs and a charged phone.
  • Many B&Bs and hotels close from November to mid-March; book ahead and confirm opening dates outside summer.
  • Single-track lanes: pull into a passing place to let oncoming traffic through, and expect sheep on the road.
