Paimio is a small river town 24 km east of Turku, known for one thing: the 1933 tuberculosis sanatorium by Alvar Aalto, part of the Aalto Works UNESCO listing. The building is 2.5 km north-east of the centre and open on guided tours in summer and early autumn. Everything else — a stone church, a riverside park, a bird bay, a swimming hall — is a quiet half-day at most. Come as a side trip from Turku, or as a lunch stop on the road between Turku and Helsinki.

Getting around

The centre is small and walkable. The sanatorium is 2.5 km north-east along Alvar Aallon tie (about 30 min on foot, or bus 705/706/709 to the "Paimion sairaala" stop). Local PA1–PA4 and Kymppilinjat lines run for residents and school transport but anyone can ride with a Föli ticket. A car or bike helps for the river valley, the bird bay and the countryside cafés.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are winter ice and dark roads, ticks in summer grass, and thin bus timetables in the evening: check the last return before you set out.
  • The railway station has no passenger trains; regional service has been discussed since the 1990s and is still not running as of 2025.
  • The sanatorium is no longer a hospital (closed 2015) and is not freely walkable: you need a guided tour or a booked stay.
  • Many cafés and the swimming hall keep short hours, and some countryside cafés close for winter.
  • The river mouth is shallow (about a metre) with no official fairway: only small boats.
  • Ankkalampi beach was closed in 2023 because of invasive species: check before you go.
