Xenia is a small Ohio city of about 26,000 people, 20 minutes east of Dayton on US 35, and the crossroads of four paved rail trails that meet at Xenia Station. Its own sights are thin — a replica 1880s depot, a courthouse clocktower, a couple of parks — but the trail network and the Black history sites in neighbouring Wilberforce give it a real half-day. Most travellers use it as a bike base or a Dayton day trip, not a place to sleep.

Getting around

A car is the default: US 35, US 42 and US 68 meet here and parking is free. Greene CATS runs scheduled rides and flex routes on weekdays only, roughly 8:00–16:00, at about $3 in-county and $6 out-of-county (check). The four rail trails meet at Xenia Station, so a bike covers the town and the countryside better than anything else.

Safety

Xenia is a low-risk small city; the real hazards are traffic on US 35 and US 42, unlit trail sections after dark, and summer heat on exposed farmland stretches. Standard US precautions apply.
  • Greene CATS is a booked-ride service, not a turn-up bus: call ahead or you will wait.
  • Trail surfaces ice over in winter and there is little shade on open farmland stretches in July.
  • Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument is by appointment only: book before you drive out.
  • Downtown Xenia is quiet after about 21:00; most evening food and drink is in Dayton.
