Havant is a small Hampshire town at the head of the causeway to Hayling Island, midway between Portsmouth and Chichester. It grew fast after the war and its centre is compact: a market street, a heritage centre, a few pubs. Most travellers use it as a rail stop or a base for the coast path, Staunton Country Park and the Hayling Billy Trail rather than as a destination in itself.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. Stagecoach runs the local bus network from Havant Bus Station, including the Coastliner 700 along the coast; the 21 serves Staunton Farm. National Cycle Routes 2 and 22 meet in town, and the Hayling Billy Trail runs traffic-free to Hayling Island.

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are fast roads, shared-path cyclists and coastal mud. Standard UK precautions apply after dark around the pubs.
  • The A27 and A3(M) are fast dual carriageways: use the crossings, not the verges.
  • The Hayling Billy Trail is shared with cyclists; keep left and expect bikes at speed.
  • Coastal mud and tidal channels around Langstone Harbour are dangerous to walk on: stay on the path.
  • Small-town hours: many kitchens stop serving by 21:00 and some places close Sunday–Monday.
