Óbidos is a walled hill town of about 12,000 people in the Oeste, roughly 85 km north of Lisbon. The whole historic centre sits inside the medieval walls, so you can walk it in two to four hours. Staying one night buys you the empty streets after the coaches leave; a day-trip buys you the same sights with crowds.

Getting around

Walk. The sights sit inside or beside the walls and the lanes are cobbled and steep in places. Buses from Óbidos town to the surrounding villages run about once a week per route, so treat them as a local service, not a tourist one. A car helps for the coast and the golf resorts.

Watch out

Safety

Óbidos is a small, low-crime tourist town; the real risks are the unrailed wall walk, wet cobbles and pickpockets in the crowded Rua Direita in summer.
  • The wall walk has no handrail and drops on both sides: skip it in rain or wind, and keep hold of children.
  • Cobbles are slippery when wet; wear shoes with grip, not smooth soles.
  • Parking inside the walls is not possible; use the paid car parks outside and walk in.
  • Weekend and summer day-trip crowds peak roughly 11:00–17:00; go early or stay the night.
  • Many small shops and restaurants close one weekday; check before you plan around a specific place.
