Skip Nazarabad unless you have a specific interest in 9,000-year-old archaeology or the house of Iran's former PM Mosaddegh; a half-day stop from Karaj is enough.

Nazarabad is a small city in Alborz province with a 9,000-year-old archaeological hill (Uzbeki Hill) and the house of former prime minister Mohammad Mosaddegh. The city itself is a modern commuter town with few services for tourists. Most travellers pass through on the way to Qazvin or Tehran.

Watch out

Safety

Nazarabad is a quiet provincial town with low crime. The main risks are traffic on the Tehran–Qazvin freeway and summer heat. Women should dress conservatively (headscarf, long coat) as required by Iranian law.
  • Few English speakers; have addresses written in Persian.
  • No official tourist information office; plan ahead.
  • Goldarreh village is a working nomadic settlement: ask permission before photographing people.
  • Mosaddegh's house may be closed without notice: check locally.
