Salla is a small Lapland municipality on the Russian border, north of the Arctic Circle, with a ski resort at Sallatunturi, a national park, and the northern end of the Karhunkierros trail. It is quiet, cold and spread out: the parish village and the resort are 7 km apart, and public transport is sparse. Two to three nights covers the resort, the park and the war museum; more if you hike the UKK trail.

Getting around

The parish village centre is walkable, but the resort is 7 km away and there is no local bus network. Long-distance coaches stop at the resort and the village; a shared taxi runs between them on request via the resort hotels. A rental car is the practical choice for the national park, Kursu and Tuntsa.

Watch out

Safety

Salla is a low-crime, sparsely populated area. The real risks are cold, distance and remoteness: winter temperatures can approach -40°C, phone coverage is patchy on trails, and help is far away.
  • Winter temperatures can fall near -40°C: layer up and check forecasts before any trail.
  • The Russian border is closed as of 2026; the border zone needs a permit from the Finnish Border Guard.
  • Värriö Strict Nature Reserve requires a special permit, granted for scientific purposes only.
  • UKK trail sections north of Kelloselkä have poor markings: map and compass skills needed.
  • Many trails and park facilities are unlit and unstaffed: tell someone your plan.
