Bisbee is a copper-mining town of about 5,600 people in the Mule Mountains of southeast Arizona, an hour and a half by car from Tucson. Mining stopped in 1974 and the hillside Victorian buildings of Old Bisbee now hold galleries, bars and small hotels. The town is compact and walkable but built on steep slopes, so you park once and move on foot. One night covers the mine, the museum and the historic core; two nights if you want Tombstone or the Chiricahua Mountains as well.

Getting around

Old Bisbee is walkable but vertical: Main Street sits in a canyon and the residential streets climb the sides, many linked only by stairs. Park once (paid lots and street spaces near Main Street) and walk. The Bisbee Bus runs Monday–Saturday between Old Bisbee, Warren, San Jose, Saginaw and Naco for $1 a ride. A car is needed for Tombstone, Douglas, Sierra Vista and the Chiricahua Mountains.

Watch out

Safety

Bisbee is a small, low-crime town and the main risks are practical: steep stairs and uneven pavements, summer heat and monsoon storms, and mine ground you should not walk on. Lock your car and keep valuables out of sight in the highway lots.
  • Streets are steep and some are stairs only; wear shoes with grip and expect altitude of about 1,600 m.
  • Summer afternoons bring monsoon thunderstorms and flash-flood risk in the canyons.
  • Many restaurants and galleries close on Mondays and Tuesdays, and kitchens stop serving early.
  • Cell signal is patchy in the canyons; download an offline map before you arrive.
  • The mine tour is underground at about 12 °C: bring a layer.
  • Do not walk into the Lavender Pit or onto mine ground; stay on the viewing platform.
