- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
Tucson sits at about 730 m in the Sonoran Desert, so it runs cooler than Phoenix and warmer than most US winter cities. It is a car city with two national-park districts on its edges, a Spanish-Mexican core, and a winter high season. Three nights covers the cactus parks, one museum and downtown; four if you add Kitt Peak or a border day trip.

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: Saguaro National Park east and west districts, San Xavier and the aircraft museum are spread out and buses are slow. Sun Tran city buses and the Sun Link streetcar cover downtown, 4th Avenue and the university. Ride-hailing (Uber, Lyft) works; booked taxis are unreliable. Bikes are fine in winter, not in summer heat.

- Monsoon storms (roughly mid-June to September) drop intense rain fast; many older streets flood and underpasses fill — never drive through standing water.
- Some main surface streets have reversible centre lanes; watch the overhead lane signals.
- Border checkpoints sit on I-19 south of Tucson; carry your passport or ID if you drive toward Nogales.
- Desert hazards: rattlesnakes, spiny cactus and no shade on trails — stay on marked paths.
