Balaoan

Skip unless you have a car and a specific reason: the watchtower and tidal pools are worth a 2–3 hour stop, but the town has no accommodation and few services.

Balaoan is a quiet coastal town in La Union with a Spanish-era watchtower and tidal pools at Immuki Island. It has no hotels, limited food options and is best visited as a short detour from Bacnotan or San Juan. Most travellers can see the watchtower and the lagoons in half a day and move on.

Safety

Balaoan is a quiet town with low crime. The main risks are the sea (strong currents at some beaches) and heat. Always ask the tricycle fare before riding.
  • Immuki Island is only walkable at low tide; check the tide schedule before going.
  • No accommodation in Balaoan proper; plan to sleep in Bacnotan or San Juan.
  • The watchtower is a short stop; there is no entrance fee but the area is open and unstaffed.
