Torquay is the eastern gateway to the Great Ocean Road, 97 km south of Melbourne and 22 km south of Geelong. It is a surf town first: Bells Beach is a short drive west, the Australian National Surfing Museum sits on Beach Road, and the outlet stores at Surf City Plaza sell the brands founded here. Most travellers use it as a one- or two-night stop before driving the coast, or as a beach day from Geelong.

Getting around

Torquay is small and walkable between the Esplanade, the beach and Surf City Plaza. Bus routes 51, 52 and 53 run between Geelong and Torquay roughly hourly; route 52 continues south to Jan Juc. For Bells Beach, Anglesea and the rest of the Great Ocean Road you need a car — there is no useful public transport along the coast.

Watch out

Safety

Torquay is a safe, small coastal town; the real risks are ocean rips, cold water and extreme summer UV, plus drink-driving on the Great Ocean Road. Lock your car and don't leave valuables on the beach.
  • Bells Beach and the ocean beaches have strong rips and cold water; swim between the flags at patrolled beaches and check Surf Life Saving Victoria's patrol times.
  • Bells Beach is a world-surfing reserve: access and parking are limited during events, and the point break is for experienced surfers.
  • Summer school holidays (mid-Dec to late Jan) fill accommodation; book weeks ahead or pay peak rates.
  • Point Impossible Beach is a legal clothes-optional beach — expect nudity if you go.
  • UV is extreme in summer; reapply sunscreen every two hours.
