Launceston is Tasmania's second city and the practical base for the north: an airport 15 km out, the Tamar Valley wine road on the doorstep, and Cataract Gorge a 20-minute walk from the centre. The city itself is a half-day of streets and museums; the value is in what you reach from it. Two nights works without a car; three or more only pays off if you rent one.

Getting around
The centre is walkable: City Park to Cataract Gorge is about 20–25 min on foot. Metro buses cover the suburbs but run thinly in the evening. A car is the real unlock for the Tamar Valley, Ben Lomond and the north-east; rent at the airport or in town. Taxis and rideshare exist but are limited late at night.
