San Diego is a small South Texas town of about 4,500 people in Duval County, on TX-44 roughly 8 miles west of Alice and on TX-359 toward Laredo. There is no hotel strip, no airport and no beach — the name is a coincidence with the California city. It works as a leg-stretch, a meal and a look at a South Texas courthouse square on the drive between Corpus Christi, Alice and Laredo. Plan an hour or two, not a night, unless you have family or business here.

You need a car. TX-44 runs east to Alice and Corpus Christi and west toward the Laredo junction; TX-359 runs southwest to Laredo and northeast to Alice. The town itself is a few blocks of streets around the courthouse — park once and walk.

Safety

Small-town Texas is generally low-crime, but this is remote ranch country: the real risks are heat, long empty roads and wildlife at dusk. Keep water, fuel and phone charge topped up, and lock your car at highway stops.
  • Summer heat: 35 °C+ afternoons; carry water and do not walk far mid-day.
  • Long empty highway stretches — fuel up in Alice or Laredo, not in between.
  • US-59/TX-359 and TX-44 carry truck traffic; watch for wide loads and passing on two-lane sections.
