Getting around

Buses link the six towns; Hanley Bus Station is the hub and almost everywhere is reachable from it. First Potteries and D&G run most routes. A Smart Ticket bought on the bus or a PlusBus add-on with your rail ticket covers the city and Newcastle-under-Lyme. Many evening services stop between 18:00 and 20:00; the 25 to Newcastle and Keele runs later. Taxis are widely available. Over 160 km of off-road cycle paths follow old rail lines and canal towpaths; a free map comes from the tourist office in Hanley Bus Station.

Safety

Stoke-on-Trent is a generally safe city. Use the same sense you would anywhere: stay with friends on a night out, avoid dark unlit paths, and keep to lit main roads around Hanley and the station after closing time.
  • Ask for 'Hanley', not 'the city centre', when giving directions: the six towns each keep their own identity.
  • From the station, buses to Hanley leave from the same side of the road; the walk is just over 1.5 km.
  • Train displays and staff often do not separate fast and stopping services to the same destination; Avanti tickets are marked 'AVANTI ONLY' and CrossCountry 'XC Only'.
  • Many buses stop running between 18:00 and 20:00.
  • Etruria Industrial Museum opens only about once a month in summer: check the website before travelling.
