DeLand is the seat of Volusia County, about 33,000 people, founded in 1876 and named for Henry A. DeLand. Its draw is a compact brick downtown on Woodland Boulevard, Stetson University's historic campus, and the DeLand Municipal Airport, one of the world's busiest drop zones for skydiving. Springs, manatee refuges and the Atlantic beaches sit within 30–60 minutes by car, so most travellers use it as a single night between Orlando and Daytona Beach rather than a multi-day base.

Getting around

Downtown DeLand is walkable: Woodland Boulevard (US 17/92) and New York Avenue (SR 44) cross at its centre. VOTRAN buses run roughly Mon–Sat, 7:00–19:00, with a day pass around $3.75 (check); routes 20, 24, 31 and 60 link DeLand with Deltona, DeBary SunRail, Seville and Daytona Beach. For springs, the beach or the airport you need a car or a rideshare.

Safety

DeLand is a small, generally safe Florida town; the real risks are summer heat and storms, dark unlit roads at night, and relying on a bus that stops running in the early evening.
  • Summer heat and near-daily afternoon thunderstorms from June to September; plan outdoor stops before noon.
  • Hurricane season runs June–November, peaking Aug–Oct; watch forecasts and know your evacuation route.
  • VOTRAN service ends in the early evening and is limited on Sundays: do not rely on it for a late return.
  • Amtrak's Silver Service and Floridian are frequently delayed by hours; do not book a tight onward connection.
