Campbell

One night in Campbell is enough: a four-block downtown, the creek trail and the Pruneyard. Base in San Jose and come for an evening.

Campbell is a small Silicon Valley town of about 44,000 people, just south-west of San Jose. Downtown is four blocks long and walkable; the rest is the Pruneyard shopping centre and the Los Gatos Creek Trail. It works as a quiet, cheaper bed for San Jose and as a half-day stop, not as a destination on its own.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Hotel cluster with a grocery store, cinema and restaurants on site; about a 15–20 min walk to downtown.

E Campbell Ave near the park

Quieter, next to Campbell Park and the creek trail; good with a car.

Safety

Practical cautions: summer heat on the creek trail, traffic on Bascom Ave and Hwy 17, and leaving nothing visible in a parked car. For current local conditions, check the City of Campbell and Campbell Police pages.
  • Summer afternoons inland can pass 35 °C (95 °F); carry water on the creek trail.
  • Downtown parking is tight on Sunday market mornings.
  • Ainsley House is open F–Su 11:00–15:00 and hours can change: check before you go.
  • The Campbell House is a private residence, not a museum: view it from the street only.
