Columbus, WisconsinColumbus

Give Columbus one night, not a base: a walkable 1845 downtown, an Amtrak stop on the Empire Builder, and a supper club. Add it to a Madison or Wisconsin Dells trip.

Columbus is a small Wisconsin city of about 5,000 people, 28 miles northeast of Madison, with a downtown of pre-1930s buildings along James and Ludington streets. It is a rail stop on the daily Empire Builder between Chicago and Seattle/Portland, so it works as a car-free overnight between Madison and Wisconsin Dells. Most travellers see the downtown, the antique mall and a supper club in half a day, then move on.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end. Outside it, streets are wide and spread out, so a car or a ride-hailing app is the practical option; local taxi coverage is thin — check. Amtrak's Empire Builder stops at Columbus station, 359 N Ludington St, once daily in each direction.

Mostly an outlet mall stop; go only if you want the shopping.

Horicon Marsh

Large wetland refuge; best at dawn for birds, and a car is needed.

Watch out

Safety

Columbus is a quiet small city and street crime is low. The real risks are winter driving on US 151 and I-39/90, deer on the road at dusk, and thin late-night transport — check before you count on a ride.
  • The Empire Builder runs once a day each way and is often hours late; do not build a tight connection on it.
  • Winter driving on US 151 and I-39/90 can be icy; check road conditions before a night drive.
  • Many downtown shops and the antique mall keep daytime hours only; evenings are quiet.
  • Small-town taxi and ride-hailing supply is limited, especially late — check before you rely on it.
