Jacksonville

Give Jacksonville 2 nights with a car: downtown riverfront one day, the beaches the next. Without a car, cut to 1 night or skip it.

Jacksonville is the largest city by land area in the contiguous United States, so distances decide your trip: downtown sights, the Beaches and the historic districts are 20–40 minutes apart by car. Two nights with a car covers the riverfront, one museum and a beach afternoon; without a car, stay downtown and treat it as a one-night stop between St. Augustine and Amelia Island.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical way to cover the city: downtown to the beaches is about 18 mi (29 km), 25–35 min. Downtown, the JTA Skyway monorail is free (M–F 6:00–21:00, extended hours at events). JTA buses run every 30–60 min, stop around 20:00–21:00 and do not run past midnight. Rideshare (Uber, Lyft) is the fallback without a car; taxis are scarce outside the airport and downtown hotels.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

St. Augustine

go

Door to door: 45–60 min by car

I-95 south, about 64 km (40 mi); Amtrak also stops there

Oldest continuously occupied European-founded city in the US mainland; a full day or an overnight.

Amelia Island

go

Door to door: 45–60 min by car

I-95 north to Fernandina Beach, about 56 km (35 mi)

Historic downtown Fernandina Beach and beaches; easy day or one night.

Palm Coast

caution

Door to door: 1 h–1 h 15 min by car

I-95 south, about 97 km (60 mi)

Mostly a base for Flagler Beach and Marineland; little in town itself.

Hammock Beach

caution

Door to door: 1 h 15 min by car

I-95 south to Palm Coast, about 105 km (65 mi)

Resort and golf area; worth it only if you are staying or playing there.

Vilano Beach

caution

Door to door: 50–60 min by car

I-95 south to St. Augustine, about 68 km (42 mi)

Quiet beach north of St. Augustine; pair it with the city, not on its own.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / Northbank

Riverfront hotels, Skyway and museums on foot; quiet at night, few restaurants open late.

Southbank

Across the river from downtown; Friendship Fountain and river views, walkable to the Northbank via the Main Street Bridge.

Jacksonville Beach / Neptune Beach

Beach base with restaurants and bars; 20–30 min drive from downtown, best if the beach is your priority.

Riverside / Avondale

Historic streets, cafés and the Cummer Museum; good for walkers, 10 min drive from downtown.

Airport area

Only for early flights; nothing to do nearby.

Watch out

Safety

Downtown and the Beaches are fine by day; at night stay in lit, busy blocks and use rideshare rather than walking empty streets. The bigger risks are heat, rip currents at the beach and long unlit drives.
  • Summer heat and humidity: heat index often 35–40 °C (95–104 °F) in Jul–Aug; plan indoor stops midday.
  • Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov, peaking Aug–Oct; check forecasts and have a plan B.
  • Downtown empties after office hours; check opening days before crossing town for one museum.
  • JTA buses stop early and do not run past midnight; a missed last bus means a rideshare.
  • Parking downtown is paid on weekdays; check the meter or garage rate before you leave the car.
