Ennis is the county town of Clare and the county's bus and rail hub, 15 km from Shannon Airport. The centre is compact and walkable: a 13th-century Franciscan friary, a free local museum, a cathedral and a wide market square, all inside 15 minutes on foot. Most travellers sleep here one or two nights and drive or bus out to the Burren, the Cliffs of Moher and Bunratty. It is a working Irish town rather than a sight in itself, which is exactly why it works as a base.

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable; the rail and bus station is 500 m east of the middle. Clare Abbey is a walk of about 30 min out along the Limerick Rd side, and Quin Abbey, Craggaunowen and Dysert O'Dea need a car or a taxi. Local buses cover Shannon, Kilkee and the coast, but frequencies drop sharply on Sundays.

Safety

Ennis is a low-risk town; the real hazards are wet roads, dark unlit lanes on the walk to Clare Abbey, and late-night noise around the town-centre bars. Standard city sense after midnight is enough.
  • Sunday and public-holiday bus timetables are thin: check the day before you rely on one.
  • The rail station has no ticket office; use the machines or buy online.
  • Some town-centre rooms sit above late bars and nightclubs: ask for a back room if you sleep early.
  • Rain arrives fast and sideways; a light waterproof beats an umbrella in Clare wind.
