Val Marie is a village of about 120 people on Highways 4 and 18, 120 km south of Swift Current, and the only real base for the West Block of Grasslands National Park. You need a car to reach it. One night covers the park's ecotour drive and the village sights; two nights add a long hike or a dark-sky evening. Most visitor services run May–September only.

Getting around

The village is small enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes. There is no public transport to or inside the park: you need a private car, and the park's ecotour road is gravel. Fuel up in Swift Current or Shaunavon before you arrive; the village pump is self-service and may be unmanned.

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are distance, weather and wildlife. Tell someone your route before hiking, carry water, and give bison and rattlesnakes a wide berth.
  • No public transport: a private car is required to get here and to see the park.
  • Most tourist services close for winter; the park is a seasonal attraction.
  • Cell coverage is patchy in the Frenchman River Valley and inside the park.
  • Gravel park roads turn slick after rain; check conditions at the visitor centre before driving in.
  • Fuel and groceries are limited — stock up in Swift Current or Shaunavon.
