Iligan is Mindanao's industrial city with a tourist side: more than 20 waterfalls within about 30 km, cold spring pools at Timoga, and a location outside the main typhoon belt. It is not a beach destination. Most travellers come for two nights from Cagayan de Oro or as a stop between CDO and Ozamiz, and use jeepneys and habal-habal to reach the falls.

Getting around

Jeepneys are the main transport, minimum fare ₱7.50. Taxis are radio-dispatched — call a dispatcher rather than flag one down. Habal-habal (motorcycle taxis) reach the falls and hinterland barangays; agree the fare before you ride. Tartanillas (horse-drawn calesas) still run through Pala-o and Tambacan.

Watch out

Safety

Iligan sits outside the main typhoon belt and is generally calm for visitors, but the real risks are wet-season river and falls conditions, unlit roads at night, and motorcycle taxis: wear a helmet, fix the fare, and avoid swimming after heavy rain.
  • Falls and river pools can flood or turn dangerous after heavy rain: ask locally before swimming.
  • Some waterfall and cave sites need a guide or a permit from the City Tourism Office; arrange it the day before.
  • ATM fees for foreign cards run about ₱250 (≈ US$5) per withdrawal, and per-transaction limits are low (₱10,000–20,000 (≈ US$180–400)): take enough cash.
  • Habal-habal fares and unmarked taxis: fix the price first.
  • The west bus terminal involves walking over dirt and gravel to board — allow extra time with bags.
