PachucaPachuca de Soto

Give Pachuca one full day plus one night: mining museum, the 1910 clock tower and a paste lunch. Add a second night only if you want El Chico or Real del Monte.

Pachuca is the capital of Hidalgo, about 90 km north of Mexico City, at roughly 2,400 m in a windy valley ringed by hills. Its draw is mining heritage, a compact colonial centre and the Cornish paste, not a long sightseeing list. Most travellers pass through in a day or use it as a base for the mountains around Mineral del Chico and Real del Monte.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Mexico ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) or your nearest Mexican consulate; keep proof of your entry (stamp or digital record) until you leave.
  • Mexico ↗Security advice differs by state: some governments advise against travel to parts of several states. Check your own government's advice for each region on your route.
  • Mexico ↗Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water and ice from reliable places.
  • Mexico ↗Foreign visitors to Quintana Roo (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Bacalar, Holbox) pay the state VISITAX online at visitax.gob.mx only; lookalike sites add fees.

Getting around

The centre is walkable. Tuzobús BRT runs in dedicated lanes with prepaid Tuzocard (2026 fare about M$10 one way, check); combis and peseros cover the rest for a similar fare and stop on request. Taxis are metered-ish and reliable; Uber covers the city. Distances between the centre and the stadium or Mina de Acosta are too long to walk.

Walk to Plaza Juárez, the clock tower, the photography museum and the market. Best for one night without a car.

Watch out

Safety

Pachuca is a working state capital and generally calm in the centre by day; use Uber or radio taxis after dark, keep to lit streets around Plaza Juárez, and treat the hillside miradores as daytime-only walks.
  • Altitude about 2,400 m: take the first day slowly if you flew in from sea level.
  • Wind and sudden afternoon rain: carry a light shell most of the year.
  • Mina de Acosta is outside the city and closes Tuesdays; hours vary by season — check before you go.
  • Some small museums (axolotl, miniatures) keep very limited hours and may ask you to call ahead.
  • Bus-terminal restrooms charge a small coin fee; keep change.
