Kalamazoo
Give Kalamazoo one full day and one night: downtown mall, Kalamazoo Valley Museum and the Air Zoo, then move on by train or I-94.
Kalamazoo sits on I-94 roughly midway between Chicago and Detroit, and Amtrak's Wolverine and Blue Water trains stop downtown. The draw is a compact walkable downtown, three colleges, a free city museum and the Air Zoo in Portage. Most travellers pass through in a day; two nights covers the museums and a Gilmore or Art Hop evening.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
Downtown is walkable; Metro Transit buses cover the city but run limited hours (roughly weekday daytime and shorter weekend service). A car is the practical choice for the Air Zoo, Gilmore Car Museum and the nature centre. Rideshare and taxis fill the gaps after the last bus.

Watch out
Safety
- Winter brings lake-effect snow and ice; allow extra time on I-94 and US-131.
- Metro Transit hours are limited on weekends: check the last bus before an evening out.
- Some downtown bars and venues are card-first; carry a little cash for small shops.
- The Air Zoo and Gilmore Car Museum are outside the city: without a car, budget for rideshare both ways.
